SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) was founded in August 1946 as a consortium of the national airlines of Denmark Norway and Sweden. Turkish Airlines, Turkey's national flag carrier, was founded in Ankara on May 20th, 1933 as the "State Airlines Administration" under the direction of the Ministry of Defence. In 1956, it was restructured, becoming "Turkish Airlines". Turkish Airlines has been a proud member of Star Alliance since 2008 and is pleased to offer its customers the wide range of benefits that membership provides.
United is a founding member of the Star Alliance network. The airline has a rich history in aviation, tracing its roots to 1926 when a small Swallow biplane owned by Walter T. Varney carried airmail to Nevada from Pasco, Washington – a flight that marked the true beginning of commercial air transportation and the birth of United Airlines.
