Sendai is the capital of Miyagi prefecture, in northern Honshū. The first thing that comes to the visitor's mind when speaking of Sendai could well be its unique dishes including Gyūtan (made from grilled beef tongue), Robatayaki (Japanese-style barbecue) and Hiyashi chuka (chilled Chinese noodles). The Gyūtan is usually served with oxtail soup, pickles and rice. It was initially considered a rather unusual dish, but gradually gained popularity throughout Japan. The coastal outskirts of Sendai were devastated by the tsunami during the earthquake of March 11, 2011, but did not cause much damage downtown. Sendai offers a wide variety of attractions, including the Zuihoden Mausoleum, Aoba Castle and the Osaki Hachimangu Shrine. Don't forget to visit the Ichibancho Arcade, which connects several shopping streets together in the downtown district.
