Macau
Macau was the first settlement in history to be opened to the Western world in China. It is also the smallest of China's 34 provincial level administrative regions. It is located on the west bank of the Pearl River Estuary. By the time the colonial period was over, when the Portuguese lease expired and the area returned to China, a fusion of Chinese and Portuguese culture had occurred and this diverse culture is reflected in its diet and Western architecture. The cuisine of Macau is mainly based on Cantonese and Portuguese cuisine, reflecting its unique culinary style after centuries of colonial rule. Macau is known for its huge casinos, luxury hotels, Chinese temples, and Portuguese architecture and churches. It offers many interesting attractions, including the ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral, the Macau Tower, the historic (Largo Do) Senado Square and the fortress.
