Located in northwestern Italy, Milan was once the capital city of the Western Roman Empire. Nowadays, it is the capital of design and fashion and the gateway to northern Italy. With its leading role in the field of the modern fashion, design and architecture, Milan—along with Paris, London and New York—is widely known as one of the fashion and design capitals of the world. There are a lot of things you can do and see in Milan, from shopping, nightlife, sport, museums, and fine art, to impressive architectural works. The Santa Maria delle Grazie Basilica houses Leonardo da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper," and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is Italy's oldest and most beautiful arcaded shopping mall. Milan is also home to many of the most famous Italian fashion brands, such as Prada, Armani, Gucci, Versace, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana and many others. In Milan, you can find a number of high-end fashion stores which are mostly located between the Via della Spiga and the Via Montenapoleone: the city is truly a paradise for shopping. Milan offers convenient access to Venice, known for its historic canals, and Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance.
