Xiamen

Xiamen, also known as Amoy in the Hokkien dialect, means "The Gate of China." Located on the southeast coast of China, it consists of Xiamen Island, Gulangyu Island, the north bank area of the Jiulong River and Tong'an County. One of the major seaports, it possesses a natural harbor in Yundang Bay, which the British insisted be opened to foreign trade due to the siltation in the Port of Quanzhou. About a five-minute ferry journey from Xiamen City, visitors can reach the Sea Garden on Gulangyu Island, which is famous for its natural beauty, ancient relics and historical architecture with European-style towns including churches, villas and consulates. Another must-see attraction in Xiamen is South Putuo Temple which was founded during the Tang Dynasty. It is close to Xiamen University which is the other great attraction. It is surrounded by sea views and the Wulao Peaks.
