Hong Kong
Situated at the southeast tip of Mainland China, Hong Kong consists of 235 small islands with Macau Island to the west and Shenzhen in Guangdong province to the north. The 235 islands include Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories, Lantau Island, and many others. Hong Kong has a population of 7 million people in an area of 425 square miles. Back in 1842, Hong Kong was a small fishing village. It was ceded to Britain by the Nanking Treaty and was a British colony for more than 150 years. During the colonial period, Hong Kong was surprisingly developed into an international commercial port. It was handed back to China again in 1997. The Peak, one of the world's most spectacular cityscapes, shows the unique scenery of Hong Kong during the old colonial days. Riding the funicular railway—the Peak Tram—is another great experience on The Peak as you can see the skyline pass by through the window. Lan Kwai Fong is a small square of streets in the central district full of raucous bars and the trendiest of restaurants where people enjoy a boozy night out.
