Taiwan's second most populous city, Taichung, was so named under Japanese rule and means "Kyoto of Formosa." Taichung, and specifically the Xitun District, is the base for many industries because the World Trade Center Taichung hosts many industrial conventions every year. It is also home to many buildings of significance. For example, the National Library of Public Information, the National Taichung Theater, the National Museum of Natural Science, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra.

The National Taichung Theater was designed by a well-known Japanese architect, Toyo Ito. He was inspired by the concept of the sound cave, and the industry subsequently described the theater as "the most difficult house to accomplish." On the Gaomei Wetlands, located on the south side of the Dajia River, visitors can film over 120 species of birds.
