Tokyo
Tokyo City, in central Honshu, is the capital of Japan, and is both its financial and political center. With 23 districts including Shinjuku, the city covers 845 square miles, and has a population of 12 million. Dating back to 1457 with the building of Edo castle, Tokyo began to expand around 1590, in the Azuchi-Momoyama period when General Toyotomi Hideyoshi ruled the whole of Japan. In 1869 the imperial capital was moved from Kyoto to here, when Emperor Meiji initiated the Meiji Restoration, and changed its name from Edo to Tokyo. Tokyo is definitely a fascinating and ultra-modern international city. The city offers plenty of attractions, shopping and dining, including the Tokyo Tower, the Tokyo Skytree, the Imperial Palace, the Sensō-ji Temple, Tsukiji Fish Market, Ginza, and Harajuku districts. Tokyo Disneyland and the Ghibli Museum are perfect places for a family day out.
