Jaap van Zweden to Lead Evergreen Symphony Orchestra in Malaysia Tour This July

Internationally acclaimed conductor Jaap van Zweden, former music director of the New York Philharmonic and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, will lead Taiwan’s Evergreen Symphony Orchestra (ESO) on its 2025 overseas tour to Malaysia this July.

Van Zweden, who was appointed Artist-in-Residence with ESO earlier this year, will be conducting three concerts at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) under the title “Jaap van Zweden & ESO: Beethoven's Symphony No. 5”.
The program will be anchored by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor, famously known as the “Fate Symphony.”

The performances are scheduled as follows:
July 18 – VIP Night, sponsored by Evergreen Marine Corporation and EVA Air
July 19 – Charity Concert in support of Malaysian social welfare organizations
July 20 – Public Concert, with tickets now available for purchase

The concert program features a range of Classical and Romantic works from the German Austrian repertoire. It opens with Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides (“Fingal’s Cave”), a vivid orchestral overture inspired by the natural beauty of the Scottish coast. Known for his musical depictions of landscapes/seascapes, Mendelssohn evokes the imagery of waves crashing against sea cliffs through expressive string and wind passages. The concert continues with Mozart’s Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Orchestra in C major, K.299, performed by Malaysian flutist Yew-Kia Koh and Taiwanese harpist Meng-lu Chiu. Koh,a founding member and former principal flutist of ESO, returns to the stage with the orchestra in a symbolic collaboration that highlights the cultural ties between Malaysia and Taiwan.

The evening’s final highlight will be Beethoven’s Symphony No.5, one of the most iconic works in classical music. From its striking opening motif to its triumphant finale, the piece represents Beethoven’s perseverance and unyielding spirit. Maestro van Zweden, known for his interpretations of Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler, brings depth and precision to this masterpiece.

Music lovers in Malaysia are encouraged to attend this rare performance featuring a world-class conductor and one of Taiwan’s leading orchestras.

The July 20 concert at 2.30pm is now open for public ticketing.
