Phnom Penh, also known as Krong Chaktomuk Serimongkul (The City of the Brahma's Faces), is the capital of Cambodia. It became the national capital in 1434 after the fall of Angkor. It was the capital for only 63 years but regained that status in 1865 during French colonial rule. Phnom Penh is situated in the south-central region of Cambodia, and surrounded by Kandal Province. The municipality is on the banks of the Tonlé Sap, Mekong, and Bassac Rivers which are a natural freshwater resource for the city. However, they also cause flooding problems in the rainy season. The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are located next to each other. The royal palace has a pavilion with a spire. It is a classic Khmer architecture. The Silver Pagoda houses the Emerald Buddha statue. It also contains a gold Buddha statue studded with thousands of diamonds. Between these two is a manicured garden that opens for the public to visit.
