Travel tips from the U.S. transportation security administration

As of January 1, 2003, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) of the United States initiated rules and regulations for air travel and several methods of thoroughly screening 100% of departure baggage at all US airports.

In some cases, screeners open your checked baggage as part of the security process. TSA suggests that you leave your checked baggage unlocked to help avoid breakage of your luggage locks. If your bag is locked and TSA screeners have to open it, the locks may be broken. You can lock your bags if you choose but TSA cannot be responsible for any damage that may occur to locked bags that must be opened for security procedures.  Whenever TSA screeners open your bag, they will place a tamper-evidence seal on the outside and leave a notice inside to signify that they inspected it.

There are some so-called dual-use items that could possibly become weapons and cannot be carried onboard the aircraft in your hand luggage or allowed past security checkpoints.  Please check the TSA's list of banned carry-on items before you travel.

For information about TSA security procedures, packing and timesaving tips, please visit U.S. Transportation Security Administration.

If you need to report lost or missing items that may have been left at a TSA screening or baggage checkpoint, or in case there has been damage to your luggage or its contents, this page provides links to Lost and Found departments and to the TSA Claims Management Office. It also provides links to download forms needed to report lost/missing items or damages related to TSA security procedures.  These forms can be submitted online or mailed to:

      TSA Claims Management Office
      601 So. 12th Street – TSA 9
      Arlington, VA  22202

Please note that you should contact the last airline flown if your luggage is missing, not the TSA.

You can call the TSA Contact Center with questions or to inquire about loss or damage claims toll free at (USA) 1-866-289-9673 or e-mail tsa-contactcenter@dhs.gov

General notification

  • Baggage means such articles, effects and other personal property of a passenger as are necessary or appropriate for wear, use, comfort or convenience in connection with a trip. Unless otherwise specified, it shall include both checked and unchecked baggage.
  • We recommend that you pack your belongings in proper suitcases to avoid damage to your luggage or its contents during its transportation.
  • At the check-in counter, please double-check to ensure that your baggage is  tagged for the correct flight and destination, and make sure that the tag number on your luggage is the same as the one as your receipt.
  • All checked baggage is X-rayed. The X-ray security check can be performed either before or after a passenger has finished the check-in process.  If this is done beforehand, the passenger will be required to stand by the X-ray checkpoint until his/her baggage passes through and is cleared.  This baggage could be opened for inspection or refused for loading onboard the aircraft by the security officer if the passenger is not present.
  • Please remember that an English nametag will be helpful if your baggage is lost.  Your English identification will speed the airline's ability to locate your baggage.  For your convenience, EVA offers blank name tags at the check-in counter free of charge.  Please use these nametags for your convenience.

EVA Air cannot be held responsible for any damage to protruding parts of baggage, including straps, wheels, handles, etc. In addition, EVA Air's liability is limited for loss of, damage to, or delay in delivery of any perishable property and baggage with inadequate packing, nor for damage to or damage caused by fragile articles, liquids, or perishables. EVA AIR’s liability for the following items is also limited in accordance with the relevant convention governing international air travel: medicines, orthotics (medical support devices), money, jewelry, silverware, negotiable papers, securities, business/personal documents, spirits, books/manuscripts, optics, keys, publications, blueprints, paintings/works of arts, sound reproduction equipment, business samples, artistic items, irreplaceable items, photographs, business equipment, natural fur products, antiques, heirlooms, collectibles, artifacts, precious metals/stones, photographic/audio/video equipment and related items, computer hardware/software and electronic components/equipment.

Although EVA Air does accept the previously listed items in checked baggage, we cannot be liable or for which EVA Air's liability may be limited for any loss/damage to them.

Free baggage allowance

The baggage allowance depends on airport and destination. Two allowance systems are in use:

  • Piece System:
For travel to and from the US and Canada and certain countries in South and Central America, the baggage allowance is per piece:
  1. Super Business Class / Business Class / Premium Laurel Class: Maximum of two pieces of baggage. The sum of the three dimensions of each piece may not exceed 158 cm (62 in.) and the weight of each piece may not exceed 32kg (70 lb.)
  2. Evergreen Deluxe / Elite/ Economy Class:
  • Evergreen Deluxe Class and Elite Class:  Maximum of two pieces of baggage. The total baggage size, measured separately and added together, cannot exceed 273 cm (107 in.) The sum of the three dimensions of each individual piece cannot exceed 158 cm (62 in.) and the weight of each piece cannot exceed 28 kg (61 lb.).
  • Economy Class:  Maximum of two pieces of baggage. The total baggage size, measured separately and added together, cannot exceed 273 cm (107 in.) The sum of the three dimensions of each individual piece cannot exceed 158 cm (62 in.) and the weight of each piece cannot exceed 23 kg (50 lb.). per piece.

     3.    Each infant is entitled to one piece with the sum of the three dimensions not to exceed
            115cm (45in.) and weight not to exceed 23kg (50lb.).

  • Weight system:
For regions/countries other than territories in the US/Canada and certain countries in South/Central America, a weight limit applies:

Excess baggage charges

Baggage in excess of EVA Air's free allowance will be subject to additional charges.

  • The piece system charge is based on the piece, size and weight exceeding EVA's free baggage allowance. It is much complicated, please click here for the charge table. If the ticket is issued in the U.S., the charge table for flights departing from the U.S will be applied throughout the itinerary. For details please contact EVA Air or ticketing offices in Taiwan.
  • The weight system charge is calculated on the basis of each extra kilogram exceeding the free baggage allowance and can vary with the route. Generally it is based on 1.5% of the highest normal direct adult one-way economy class fare, only with the following exceptions:
1% (except within Europe) from Austria/Bulgaria/Israel, from Australia/New Zealand (Except 1.5% from Australia / New Zealand to South West Pacific), and from Europe/Middle East to Australia/New Zealand.
1.35% within Europe, except 1% from Austria / Bulgaria / Finland.
  • Different regulations and charges apply to special baggage, e.g. golf clubs, surfboards, windsurfing equipment etc. Please contact EVA AIR reservations 24 hours prior to your departure . Click here and contact EVA Air or ticketing offices in Taiwan for more details.

Note:

  1. Whether your luggage will be assessed by the piece or by weight, we recommend that you not pack any single piece of baggage heavier than 32 kg/70 lb. to prevent injury to yourself or to baggage handlers.
  2. Any single piece of baggage heavier than 45 kg/99 lb. requires advance application with EVA so that proper preparations can be arranged. Because of structural limitations on some types of aircraft, any single piece of baggage heavier than 45 kg/99 lb. could be denied loading.  Please contact EVA Air or ticketing offices in Taiwan for details.
  3. Because of structural limitations on narrow body aircraft MD90, EVA does not accept any liquid material shipped in drums as checked baggage.
  4. For passengers holding tickets issued after 01APR2011, IATA Resolution 302 provides the rules for baggage allowance and charges for interline journeys. Please click here to read IATA Resolution 302. When a customer travels on a codeshare flight, the policy regarding checked bags follows the rules determined by the originating operating carrier. For passengers whose ultimate ticketed origin or final destination is a U.S. point, the free baggage allowance for the complete itinerary shall apply the exceptional rules governed by US DOT and determined by the first main carrier. Please contact EVA AIR or ticketing offices in Taiwan for details.

Hand-carry baggage

Hand-carry baggage is permitted in the aircraft cabin only if it is safely stowed in the closed overhead bin, closet or under your seat. Every passenger is allowed one hand-carry baggage weighing 7 kg/15 lb. or less and no more than 56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm in dimension or 115 cm/45 in. overall. However, this maximum dimension is subject to aircraft type. For your convenience, a measurement Test Unit is available at either the check-in counter or boarding lounge to help you to determine whether your baggage meets these requirements. If the hand-carry baggage is overweight or oversized, it will be checked and carried in the cargo hold or refused carriage.

Please note that:
1. Hand-carry baggage stowed under passenger seat is fitted in means to prevent it from sliding sideward or forward into the aisle.

1. One piece of laptop or purse or small backpack or briefcase or camera case.
2. Reasonable quantity of coat, hat, scarf, shopping bag, food, drink and other personal belongings.

Above items should be safely stowed in the closed overhead bin, closet or under your seat. If you put your free carry-on item in the seat pocket, it should be within the vertical line from the seat back and under no circumstances can it protract into the aisle.

Special items

Some baggage is accepted to be carried into cabin due nature limits, as follows. Such baggage should be stored at the first row of closed overhead bin, closet or under your seat. Baggage handling

EVA Air recommends that you double-check your baggage tag(s) to make sure it is going to your destination with you. Also, we suggest that you reconfirm that the tag number(s) on your receipt(s) is the same as that on your baggage tag(s).

Before you pass through immigration, please make sure your baggage has been inspected by X-ray at a security checkpoint and cleared to proceed. EVA is authorized to inspect your baggage whether you are present when it is being examined or not and can refuse to transport it if you are absent.

Baggage that has passed through security-inspection points will be moved to the aircraft loading area by either an automated baggage-handling system or, in some airports or conditions, by baggage handlers. Most baggage is loaded into a special container that requires it to be stacked. If any attachments such as handles or straps are not properly stored, damage could possibly occur to the luggage during the transportation process. You are encouraged to use appropriate luggage and to remove any unfixed or protruding attachments.

At baggage claim areas

Order and priority for unloading is determined by the cabin class flown and loading position. Please allow 20-50 minutes for your baggage to be delivered to the claim area.

To ensure that you don't take someone else's identical or similar-looking luggage by mistake, please double-check the tag number on the suitcase to make certain it is the same as the one on your baggage receipt before you take it from the conveyor.

Baggage irregularity

As soon as you determine that your baggage has been delayed, pilfered, lost or damaged, please contact EVA airport personnel and submit a claims report. Please note that all claims for delayed, pilfered or lost baggage should be lodged with EVA as soon as possible, and must be submitted within twenty-one (21) days. Claims for damaged baggage must be submitted within seven (7) days.

Baggage tracing

Please click here for the EVA Air baggage service office.

In the event your checked bags do not arrive on your flight, reasonable efforts complying with flight duration, frequency of flights, or Customs & Immigration procedures at the destination airport will be made to ensure that the bag is returned to you within 24 hours after you have arrived at final destination. Most baggage delays are the result of missed connections at transfer points and more than 90% of the baggage reported missing upon arrival is reunited with its owner within five (5) days after the flight. If your baggage is still missing after five (5) days, we will send you a Baggage Claim/Inventory Form to fill out.  Or you can click here to download the form immediately. This claim form will help us locate your baggage and process any related compensation. Please complete and return the form to EVA Air within twenty-one (21) days to maintain your claim rights.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recommends that passengers report missing baggage to the last airline flown for trips that have involved more than one carrier. In case of late delivery, damage, or missing luggage, please contact the last carrier you flew to reach your destination.

We offer Online baggage tracing to give you a convenient alternative for tracking the status of your missing baggage. This tracing service allows direct communication between you and us.

Baggage damage

EVA and its agents had exercised due diligent care to handle all baggage. Nevertheless, damage might happen under some certain circumstances. EVA works with luggage repairment at major airports. These services provide door-to-door delivery of repaired or replacement luggage. EVA is responsible for appropriate repair or replacement costs.

If your luggage is beyond repaired, the age of possessions may be taken into account. EVA will compensate based on the condition of the damaged luggage.

Please be reminded that the primary function of luggage is to protect its contents. Some damage may be in connection with the nature of the baggage or its contents.  EVA must refuse certain kinds of damage, in accordance with international rules, as described below; if you have any personal insurance to cover the damage, EVA would be glad to provide necessary documentations :

    1. Minor damage of protruding parts such as wheels, feet, straps, locks, extending handles, hanger hooks, loose flaps, pockets or any kind of attached item.
    2. Minor dent or scratch or torn on baggage
